This unconventional textbook provides a concise introduction to biochemistry that is not overloaded with factual data. It is intended for students who have already mastered the fundamentals of general, organic, and analytical chemistry. In twelve chapters, the narrative progresses from the basic structures of biological molecules (amino acids, peptides, proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, and carbohydrates) through membrane processes and molecular genetics to relevant metabolic pathways. Particular attention is given to enzymology and bioenergetics, as these facilitate an understanding of metabolism as a single system of chemical reactions. The explanatory text is supplemented by a number of curiosities and reflections. Each chapter contains several questions and their solutions, and the whole final chapter is devoted to the resolution of complex biochemical questions.

The first edition of this textbook, published in 2015, completely sold out during the summer of 2017. The authors, inspired by the gratifying interest of the academic community, prepared the second revised edition. In autumn 2021, the popularity of the textbook repeated itself: panic was spreading among students because the textbook was sold out, to the satisfaction of the publisher as well as the authors. We all would consider it irresponsible to simply reprint the book because a significant change in the international enzyme classification, which we referred to on multiple occasions, happened in 2018. This was the main (but not only) reason why we decided to prepare the third edition. In recent years, with the increasing internationalisation of teaching in universities, the need to translate this textbook into English has become apparent.

First electronic edition 2026, revised and translated from the third Czech edition 2022.

The text was translated by Milan Kodíček, Olga Valentová, and Hassan Hashimi.

The text was professionally reviewed by Prof. RNDr. Libor Grubhoffer, CSc., and Assoc. Prof. RNDr. Jan Staněk, CSc.
