The textbook is based on the experiences of the authors with the long-term education of immunochemistry and immunology at the universities in France, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland. After the brief history of immunochemistry detailed description of immunochemistry fundamentals are given. The students will become familiar with all important terms. The detailed description of the properties of antigens and haptens, as well as all types of antibodies (polyclonal, monoclonal, recombinant, etc.) and their mutual interactions are described with excellent coloured pictures. Of course, the description of cellular and molecular basis of antibody production is not missing. On the basis of the knowledge of the main partners of the immunochemical interactions the principles of all important immunochemical techniques is elucidated. The methods are sorted, first, on the analytical techniques based on the primary reaction between antigens and antibodies and second, on the analytical utilization of the secondary effects resulting from the antigen-antibody formation. Important part of the textbook is the brief description of three main areas of immunochemical methods utilization, i.e. in medical diagnosis, food analysis and environmental testing.
